Certain groups are automatically entitled to free NHS prescriptions, while others can apply for certificates that entitle them to free NHS prescriptions.
You’re entitled to free NHS prescriptions if you’re:
Under 16
Aged 16-18 and in full-time education
Aged 60 or over
Receiving certain benefits
Pregnant or have certain medical conditions
Additionally, some prescribed items, like contraceptives and medication given to hospital inpatients, are always free. Your prescriber can provide more detailed information.
If you know you'll have to pay for a lot of NHS prescriptions, it may be cheaper to buy a Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC). Find out how to save money with a PPC
