The Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) allows you to claim a refund for travel costs if you're referred to specialist NHS treatment or tests.
Usually, to qualify, you must meet three conditions:
Receive a qualifying benefit or meet the NHS Low Income Scheme criteria.
Be referred by a healthcare professional for specialist care.
Attend a separate appointment from when the referral was made.
The refund is based on the cheapest suitable transport. Public transport is usually preferred. If driving, you'll be reimbursed for fuel at the local mileage rate and may also claim for car parking and toll charges. Taxi use must be approved in advance, and in London, you can claim for congestion or ULEZ charges.
Remember!
You're expected to pay for your travel and claim back the costs within 3 months.
You must keep your receipts and any proof of payments.
