What is a new eVisa?

August 21st, 2024

Britain is moving to a digital immigration system. If you hold EU Settled Status or Pre-Settled Status (EUSS/PSS), your status is already digital, and you don’t have to do anything. If you use a physical document to prove your status, e.g. Biometric Residency Permit, a stamp or a vignette sticker in your passport, you will need to set up a digital UKVI account.

Home Office video explaining what is a new eVisa

Here are a few points to remember.

What is the new eVisa?

  • The new eVisa is a digital version of your immigration status, stored online rather than in your passport.

  • It allows you to view and prove your immigration status easily using the UK government’s view-and-prove online service.

What does this mean for you?

  • Your current immigration status remains the same—this digitisation won’t change any rights or conditions you already have.

  • You no longer need to rely on a physical visa or a stamp in your passport. Your digital status cannot be lost or stolen.

How does it work?

  • You can access your eVisa anytime through your online account.

  • When needed, you can share your eVisa details with employers, landlords, or other relevant parties securely online through a sharecode that is valid for 90 days.
