What is Domestic Violence?

Recognising it is the first step towards getting help. Anyone forced to change their behaviour because they are frightened of their partner or ex-partner’s reaction is experiencing abuse.

You are not alone! Studies show that 1 in 3 women experience domestic violence from a partner, ex-partner or family member.

Domestic abuse can include:

  • physical or sexual abuse

  • violent or threatening behaviour

  • psychological or emotional abuse (this type of abuse can be very subtle)

  • coercive behaviour - for example, humiliation or intimidation

  • controlling behaviour - for example, making someone feel less important or dependent on the abuser, or controlling you in other areas like: setting up CCCTV cameras in the house, limiting your social network, asking your passwords for social media etc.

  • 'economic abuse' - this includes controlling someone's possessions or how they earn or spend money

What can we do?

Call us and you can talk to a Romanian/Polish support worker woman in confidentiality.

We can :

  • Inform you about your rights, the impact of domestic abuse and what kind of help is available for you

  • Talk to you to understand your needs and your priorities, while keeping in mind your safety

  • Support you in accessing: housing, benefits, legal support (family law) and immigration services

  • Give you emotional support and peer support

In case of emergencies

We are NOT an emergency service. If you are in danger please call 999, or for out of hours support, call the 24/7 National Domestic Abuse Helpline 0808 2000 247
